Sunnyside Literacy Lab operates on a modest budget with zero margins.
Our current equity policy offers one-on-one services at a group rate for select learners. Our sliding scale makes the program accessible for our families. These opportunities, along with our free public workshops, are funded solely by SLL and supported by the leadership budget.
Our model is successful because we put kids and educators first, but it leaves little wiggle room.
We take pride in serving our community.
79% of learners are people of color.
42% of learners have IEPs (documented learning differences).
42% of learners are bilingual.
47% of learners are adolescents.
While our program is priced for affordability, it is still a significant budget line for many families.
When life happens, families may have to make difficult decisions and pause services.
For learners with complex learning profiles, this pause can have a significant impact.
Our current goal is to create an emergency fund for our existing families in Tiers 1 + 2 of our sliding scale. This will provide one-time assistance to cover our full trimester-long program fee, ensuring the continuation of services.
Families whose children are most in need of our services are prioritized. These learners fall into the following categories:
Elementary-aged children reading 3-4 years below grade level.
Adolescents reading 5-8 years below grade level.
